Turn your gpu into a Ti variant

You just bought a brand-new graphics card, installed it in your PC, and you're ready to get every bit of performance you paid for. While modern GPUs are already incredibly powerful, there are a few simple adjustments you can make in MSI Afterburner to help your graphics card maintain better performance while keeping temperatures under control.

The goal isn't necessarily to push your GPU to its absolute limit or turn your computer into a jet engine. Instead, it's about finding a balance between performance, cooling, and noise.


Start With Your GPU Fan Speed

One of the first settings worth looking at in MSI Afterburner is your GPU's fan speed.

By default, many graphics cards use an automatic fan curve. This can mean the fans remain completely off—or run at very low speeds—while the GPU is relatively cool. The fans may not really start ramping up until the GPU reaches temperatures around 60–70°C.

While this can make your PC quieter, there is a tradeoff.

A GPU running at a lower temperature generally has more thermal headroom than one that's already sitting at 60°C or higher. As temperatures increase, the GPU may reduce its boost clock to stay within its thermal limits.

Rather than waiting for the graphics card to get hot before the fans start working, you can take control of the fan speed yourself.


Finding the Right Fan Speed

The ideal fan speed is going to be different for everyone.

Some people don't mind hearing their GPU fans, while others want their PC to be nearly silent. Your case, room temperature, GPU cooler, and personal tolerance for noise all play a role.

The basic idea is simple: increase the fan speed until you find a level that's loud enough to provide good cooling but quiet enough that you can comfortably live with it.

For example, running the fans at around 70–80% can provide considerably more cooling than allowing the GPU to sit at very low fan speeds until it becomes hot.

In the video, an 80% fan speed was found to be a reasonable compromise between cooling performance and noise. With the computer case closed, the additional noise was much less noticeable.

Your results may be different, so experiment with your own system.


Why Lower GPU Temperatures Matter

Keeping your graphics card cooler isn't just about watching a lower temperature number on your monitoring software.

Modern GPUs dynamically adjust their clock speeds depending on several factors, including temperature and power limits.

A cooler GPU has more thermal headroom, which can allow it to maintain higher boost clocks for longer periods of time.

That can benefit everything from gaming to video rendering and other GPU-intensive workloads.

Even during everyday computer use, your graphics card can experience different levels of activity. Whether you're watching YouTube, browsing social media, playing a game, or rendering a video, keeping temperatures under control can help the GPU operate efficiently.


Increase the Power Limit

Another setting you may see in MSI Afterburner is the Power Limit slider.

If your particular graphics card and MSI Afterburner version provide this option, you can increase the power limit to its maximum permitted value.

The power limit determines how much power the GPU is allowed to draw when it is under load.

Think of it like giving the graphics card enough room to get the job done. If the GPU reaches its power limit, it may have to reduce its clock speed even when there is still additional performance available.

Increasing the power limit gives the GPU more room to operate at higher performance levels.

However, this doesn't mean your graphics card will constantly consume the maximum amount of power. Modern GPUs dynamically manage their power consumption based on workload and their built-in limits.


What About Overclocking?

Once you've adjusted your cooling and power settings, you can start experimenting with overclocking.

Overclocking can be a fun way to squeeze additional performance out of a graphics card, but it isn't necessary for everyone.

Even a modest increase in clock speed can potentially provide additional performance, but the results will depend heavily on your specific GPU, cooling system, silicon quality, and workload.

If you do decide to overclock, make changes gradually and test your system for stability and temperatures after each adjustment.

There's no reason to immediately push your graphics card to its absolute limit.


Don't Forget the Noise

Maximum performance doesn't necessarily mean running your GPU fans at 100% all the time.

There's a point where the additional cooling isn't worth the additional noise.

For many people, the best setup is somewhere in the middle: enough fan speed to keep temperatures under control without making the computer unpleasantly loud.

The "perfect" setting is therefore going to be personal.

If you can barely hear your PC while maintaining reasonable temperatures, you've probably found a good balance.

Getting More Out of the GPU You Already Own

Graphics cards aren't cheap, so it makes sense to get as much performance as possible from the hardware you've already purchased.

Fortunately, you don't necessarily need an aggressive overclock to accomplish that.

Start with the basics:

  1. Adjust your GPU fan curve so the fans begin cooling the card before temperatures get excessively high.

  2. Find a comfortable fan speed that balances cooling and noise.

  3. Increase the Power Limit if your GPU supports it and you're looking for additional performance headroom.

  4. Monitor temperatures and clock speeds while gaming or performing other demanding workloads.

  5. Experiment with overclocking carefully if you want to push performance further.

MSI Afterburner gives you a convenient way to control many of these settings from one place.

Ultimately, the goal isn't simply to make your GPU run hotter, louder, and faster. The goal is to find the sweet spot where your graphics card can maintain strong performance while staying within reasonable temperature and noise levels.

And considering how much modern graphics cards can cost, getting the most out of the GPU you already have can be well worth the effort.
